1983 Fiat Spider Electronic Ignition No Spark Condition

Post by bahassler »

I was having a problem getting spark on my 1983 Fiat 124 Spider after it had been sitting for 30 years. It needed a new magnetic pickup and I also installed a new Ignition Control Module (ICM). To verify that it was functioning properly I wanted to devise a bench testing setup. The result is shown in this video. It is very difficult to install a new magnetic pickup with the distributor installed because the screws can't easily be accessed without turning the distributor shaft. Since you need to do this many times it's just easier to remove it and clamp it in a vise, which also makes it much easier to set the proper air gap between the reluctor and the pickup.

I've replaced the magnetic pickup several times without removing the distributor. I didn't have any problems getting to the screws.
