Picture of my rebuilt cylinder head

Hello All.

Image

It is an '77 1800 head, original to the car as far as I know. It had either 15k or 115k miles on it, your guess... It has been completely disassembled, cleaned and new seals/gaskets all around. The intake/exhaust runners have been enlarged and polished with port/gasket matching done on the headers as well. Everything got a coat of High Heat Aluminum paint. Golden Lodge plugs. Air injection ports plugged with bolts and smoothed over with some JB Weld, if you didnt know what to look for you wouldn't see them.

I hope it is going in the car this weekend. Everyone start putting your timing hats on because I have never timed an engine... First for everything. I also have never rebuilt a cylinder head and I think I did a fair job. ;)

In the end it will be a stock 1800 block with the ported 1800 head breathing through a Weber 38 ADL carb. Someday I may spring for some autocross cams to really make it scream, but I don't want to adjust the valve lash at the moment.

I hope to have it drivable for the Arkansas Drive in a few weeks if anyone is planning on making it.

make sure the cams are timed properly before setting the head on! and have the #1 cyl on TDC, that way you don't have to turn anything without the t-belt in place

The cams should be alligned holes to timing marks on the housing, correct? And the aux. cam alligned with the hole lined up with it's mounting bolt and the tension spring retaining bolt, correct?

You know your valve covers are reversed. Also, I've never seen an exhaust cam pully like that, what purpose does it serve?

yeah to both of those things, I noticed that oil fill hole in the wrong place right away, but what is that cam pulley thing? How do the turbo 2L cams look? maybe it's off of one of those?

It had a air pump at one time that ran off the exhaust cam. I will have to switch the valve covers. It has been so long I didn't remember.

The ADL is almost a bolt on application. It is very similar in setup to the stock 32. It is progressive instead of syncronized, which is better for efficiency and drivability.

The DGAS has the linkage on the wrong side and would take significant fabrication to get it right and keep it right. More than I wanted to take on.

Mark, youll like the ADL, its the best single carb for this engine. Im thinkin about doin a custom job on my 2L heads, and probably some cam replacment. Maybee even gettin a 1800 head... Ill probably get Jon Logan to do the head for me. After all that, Ill probably need some nice shiney custom headers! Right now, Im workin on a dist-less system. Id suggest sendin your dizzy out for a re-curve this winter, as the current curve is for emissions, and a wimpy carb. Thisll help a bunch!!! 8)
