Keep it on topic, it will make it easier to find what you need.

Living in CT, where there are no inspections for cars past age 25, my 78 has been purified. Image

Here's what a stock engine looks line (from other side) Image

Wow - nice - very nice! How did you get your timing belt cover so clean. I have tried all kinds of things and can't get it close to the color of yours.

To plug the holes on a 1800 head you can use wheel logbolts and cut
them about 1/3 of the way on the thread then grind a flat head screw
slot in them, it's cheap and easy .

I think my air pump holes are taken care of. I figured out what the PO did, tell me what you think of it.

He took a ball bearing of the correct size and dropped it in the hole, I guess there is a lip in there somewhere. Then cut part of the bolt off and screwed it back in on top of the ball bearing. I am sure it makes for a nice seal.

If I am wrong and this is the stock setup, please tell me. It looks like it was modified.

anything that seals it and will stay in place will work. And no, the ball bearing wasn't stock!

Smog Equipment

Post by kmartin83 »

Since you're taking off all the smog equipment, I'm a poor lady with a 79 spider in California  that needs an operating EGR valve. Was hoping the one you are taking off is available?

the 79 egr valves were different than all other years unfortunately. I'll check and see if I have a good one

If Mark doesn't have one I might as I just removed all the smog stuff from my '79 Spider. Although I'm not sure what it looks like or how to tell if it is working :(

EGR Valve

Post by kmartin83 »

Thanks for the help! If Mark doesn't have one, I might want to take a look at yours.

How can you tell if the EGR Valve is working correctly?

the valve should be closed without vacuum to it, and it should open when vacuum is applied

I knew it! Thank you so much Kathie for your post!

Even though I live in Michigan (no smog tests) I attempt to preach to the crowd about saving that emissions stuff for those who are trying to keep their cars running with the equipment in place.

Your post proves my pleading is accurate!

Good luck with your EGR valve....sorry I cannot help. Let us know when you are successful..

Bringing this back from the dead. Treat me like I'm clueless, because I am. I have all the connections on my "new" carb labeled. I need to replace some hoses, but can I ditch the whole EGR, and those colorful connectors on the side (is that what you are calling the Christmas tree)?
edit: sooo, this thing: do I need it?

and can I take the air pump completely off, what's the deal with that?

you can remove the air pump and the thermo valve block, Please don't throw that stuff away though! Some of that stuff is hard to get and some states still require smog checks on those cars
