Clicking Noise In Rear End

Post by spederman85 »

When I coast to a stop, I have a clicking noise coming from the rear end. It is not very noticable or lowd. It just worries me that I may have an issue starting.

Any thoughts on what it might be and how to deal with it?

Thanks

Its not loud yet! Just wait, it will get louder.I think you have a broken pinion gear and that stinks because that is a costly problem.

that would be my bet also. It won't take long to get much louder

Put the car on a level surface with the engine off and push it back and forth while it is in neutral. Try to find where the clicking is coming from. Then block the front wheels and put the rear axle up on jack stands. Put the car in neutral and spin the drive shaft counterclockwise when looking from the rear, note if you hear any clicking. Then spin each rear wheel in the direction of travel and note sounds.

A damaged pinion gear would NOT be my first, second or third guess.

Brake pads will shift in the caliper esp if the rotor is a tad out of round, click, click, click.
And check lug nuts/studs, wheel flexing cause of loose nuts/studs will click, sounds a little like a bad CV joint on a FWD car.

M Matt has right idea, figure out where noise is coming from and go from there.

I broke a ring gear tooth on a truck once. It sounded exactly as you described. I'd say ring gear tooth over pinion tooth if it clicks once every tire rotation.
