Getting Ready for Smog Test! Help!!!!

I just purchased a 76 fiat spider and i love it! I am scared that it wont pass smog though. I live in California and they are wsticklers out here about it (for good reason i guess). The car idles kind of weird. It sounds like it is loping. I guess it sounds like its trying to sound like a chevy or something but small, you know like a hot rodder kind of. The rpms seem to be very loiw as they do not register on the tach till you get it to 800 or higher. what are the rpms to be? Can anyone recommend what to do to prep the car for smog inspection? The smog pump is there and seems to be working. None of the dash lights work but are all hooked up. I have the manuals for the car but am fairly new at this, any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.
