Questionable Weld?

Post by FirstTimeFiat »

Can someone please tell me what I'm looking at? I just bought a 1979 2000 and thought did good job inspecting but this crack appeared on the rear passenger side wheel arch. I inspected inside and found what looks like a questionable weld. I ran a magnet over everything and this area seems to be all metal so not sure what's going on?

Is this the inner rear fender arch on the passenger side? If so, it's very common for rust to appear in that area, and it looks like someone might have patched the rust using an arc of sheet metal and adhesive rather than welding it in. That may be a perfectly acceptable repair using modern bodywork techniques, as my days of bodywork go back to the 1980s when new metal was brazed or welded in.

Shouldn't be an issue if it was done right. In general, almost all Fiats have rust in the fender arches front and rear, with the passenger side being more susceptible presumably due to the right side of the road having more snow, rain, mud, grit, gravel, whatever than the middle.

Thank you so much! It is exactly the passenger side rear wheel well. I’m glad it’s a common occurrence and nothing too concerning. I am seeing it crack along the repair line on the outside of the car, shown in pic. Would that suggest a poorly executed repair?

Possibly, but I'm not a body repair kind of guy. You could take it to a body shop to have them take a look.
