ATF Fluid in radiator?

Post by jlopresto »

I am in the middle of replacing my radiator. I drained the radiator and only got coolant. When I disconnected the banjo bolts for the two automatic transmission lines I got red atf fluid out of the banjo bolts. Is that normal?

Yes its normal for ATF to drain out of the ATF/Transmission Cooler on the radiator. As long as you only got ATF draining out of the ATF/Transmission Cooler and only Coolant out of the Coolant lines on the radiator you should be fine.

You're going to have one of two different variations with one being a separate coil of tubing inside the radiator through which ATF flows to be cooled by the coolant flowing around the tubing or a few sets of fins and tubes through which only ATF flows for cooling with the most common being the first.

You do need some form of heat exchange to take place to get rid of all that damaging heat an automatic transmission generates.
