Turn Signal Issue
I'm not sure if this an electrical or mechanical issue. I have an 85 and the turn signals are not turning of when I complete the turn. Where should I start?

Re: Turn Signal Issue
i have the same issue with a 78 spider. It looks like a mechanical issue with the turn signal switch.

Re: Turn Signal Issue
The fingers under the steering wheel that release the turn signal switch are broken, the switch under the steering wheel is sticking or possibly the orientation is no longer correct.
In any case its a mechanical issue under the steering wheel when the turn signals do not turn off/cancel themselves.

Re: Turn Signal Issue
Thanks for the response. I had an issue with no high beams and removed the steering column. I could not find an issue with the headlight switch and reinstalled. The high beams work, but now the turn signals do not turn off.DieselSpider wrote:The fingers under the steering wheel that release the turn signal switch are broken, the switch under the steering wheel is sticking or possibly the orientation is no longer correct.

These "fingers" are on the bottom of the steering column? If so, then I assume I will need to remove the column? Anyone have any pics of these "fingers" on an 85 spider? I would like to know what I'm looking for.

Re: Turn Signal Issue
The fingers/pawls should be right under the steering wheel when you pull it off the top of the column. You do not need to remove the steering column to access them.davery wrote:Thanks for the response. I had an issue with no high beams and removed the steering column. After you remove the steering wheel from the column they should be below the ring with the horn button contacts on them. The entire mechanism is incorporated with the headlight switch assembly on the column and you very likely disturbed it when you opened up the column to check the headlight switch.
On the 85 that switch assembly is almost $400 so be very careful with it.

Re: Turn Signal Issue
I'm hoping to look at it tonight. I know about the cost of an 83-85 steering column. In fact, the only ones you can buy new are reproductions (which are slightly different than the OEM). I do have a used 83-85 steering column, that appears to be in working order.DieselSpider wrote:The fingers/pawls should be right under the steering wheel when you pull it off the top of the column. I am in sticker shock on that one since the switch alone on the newer models is about 4 times the cost of the one for my 1978.

Re: Turn Signal Issue
Since you had it apart recently, you most likely just failed to line it up properly when reassembling. It's been a while since I had my '84 apart, but there's a pin that has to go in a hole in the bottom of the cluster in order for the cancel mechanism to work. Been there, done that. Just have a close look and it will be obvious. Easy fix.

Re: Turn Signal Issue
I'm having the same issue with my 1970. Is it the same mechanism or is it different on the older models? Or did the older ones just not have a turn signal cancel?

Re: Turn Signal Issue
My '69 cancelled but my current '70's fingers are broken or out of adjustment.
I just always check so I do not look like an old person (which I am) driving down the road for 20 miles with my blinkers on.

Re: Turn Signal Issue
In 1983 they changed to an entirely different cluster. i did dismantle the one in my 1980 but don't recall how that one cancelled. That was over 30 years ago, after all.

Re: Turn Signal Issue
Just a thought..... My 80 wouldn't turn off the turn signals either. Discovered that the wheel alignment toe in was done some time in the past without the steering at dead center. Off by at least an entire turn. There is enough adjustment in the tie rod ends so this is easy to do by mistake. When I raised the front and turned the steering lock to lock and found the true center, the turn signal off function worked! Realigned at actual steering center and that solved the problem. It was just out of its range of action! Odd one for sure.
