Why is my tachometer moving slowly ?

Post by grasshopper »

My tach was behaving weird so I changed it and installed a different tach. As far as I know, this one works fine. The issue is that it seems to react slow. It will give me my rpm reading but it takes its time then settles back very slowly when the revs drop. Is it possible that my coil may be sending a weak signal ?

I suggest checking and cleaning all the electrical connections. My tach would slowly climb in RPM at a given speed as the gauge heated up. After cleaning the connections the tach is pretty consistent.

How do you clean the connections? I have a tach which isn't functioning and need to troubleshoot. :)

Use fine sandpaper to clean oxidation off the terminals. Female terminals can be squeezed a bit with pliers to tighten them up if they are loose fitting. There is a ground pod under the dash that all the gauges go to which should be removed to clean the joint between it and the body. Use dielectric grease on all terminals when reconnecting.
