Calipers position

Post by cyberborikua »

Hi! Front calipers seem to be dragging the rotors, especially the front passenger side one. Thinking on replacing both calipers and the rotors for better braking. ICarid have them remanufactured but asked about caliper position either forward or rear mounting. Also, unloaded vs semi-loaded. Question is, on the 1979 spider, what position are the front and back calipers, and is semi-loaded better? I know none of the two come with pads. Thanks!

P.S - Suggestions for other part suppliers?

Where are you located?

Autoricambi has all the parts we need.

I know Autoricambi and order from them a lot. However, CariD have them much cheaper and with a very low exchange charge. I am assuming that the caliper position is rear mounted for they are behind the rotor, not on the front.

Hello,

I might be wrong ; but that is not something you can choose, isn't it ?
Might change from year to year ( I don't know; but it would be strange), but 1/ you can see it on your front wheels and 2/ they should know when you gave the car specification ( Year, type).
To me it seems weird questions, also loaded/semi-loaded, for brakes ??? ( for specifications about suspension, ok ).

There are more intelligent people on this forum ; but to me those questions are strange (and psychologically ideal to come ahead of you ( but I hope I'm wrong and there is a sensible answer) : like an Ice-vendor in Milan who ,when you ask an stragliatella- ice-cream , asks : " con o senza chocolate seniore ?".

hope this helps you ( a bit).

about the trouble : new rubber parts ( hoses and piston-seals )and driving a lot might do the trick,( in my opinion) the brakes are prone to stick. ( is one side warm after driving and braking 5-10 minutes?)

So the answer to the original question is, as near as I can tell, all the Fiats have rear mounted brake calipers. As for semi-loaded or unloaded, I would go with unloaded. Looking at the website, I think their definition of semi-loaded includes the caliper mounting bracket, which you don't need to replace.

Thank you. I took a gamble last night and ordered the unloaded, rear mounted calipers. After googleling for a while it became evident that our calipers are rear mounted. I just did not know the meaning of each term when they gave me the two options. I should be good to go!
