Rear axle oil seal replacement

Post by maxdog »

Hi
I have an oil leak around the passenger side rear brake caliper . Hopefully it's a leaking caliper which is a simple fix . Sod's Law , the universal constant , probably dictates a failed axle oil seal . Or may be there's a blocked axle vent ,and pressure is building up in the axle, he said in jest
If it's the worst case , a failed seal
Is this a DIY fix or do I need professional help ??
Presumably I need a hub puller , are Fiat hubs easy to shift or are they like my old Jensen Interceptor hubs which have broken standard hub pullers, made strong men weep , and spawned a range of hefty fabricated iron ware ??
Is the seal a standard metric item or a FIAT special ? Any one have specification for the seal ?I'd like to buy it locally rather than import from the USA

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Replacing the rear axle seal is easier than a full caliper rebuild. You do have to remove the caliper and mounting hardware. After removing the axle retaining bolts, I put a disc on the axle backwards, held on with wheel bolts engaged about 5 turns. I then abruptly pull the disc on the bolts like a slide hammer, very rarely does it not work.

Thanks '
It's easier than I thought . Any idea of the dimensions or generic spec for the seal .

HI
Good news ! I discovered the rear axle breather , under a crusty looking lump on the axle casing . I removed it , cleared out the grot of ages ,replaced it , topped up the axle oil and went for a long run .
I'm happy to report that this has cured the oil leak at the rear wheel , one less job for the winter maintenance period .
