universal joint lubrication

Universal joints on drive shaft have zerk fittings (73 124 spider), what type of lubricant is recommended and how often to lubricate?

I have a 1970 Spider and 1970 shop manuals. So this might not apply.
For the propeller shaft and joints it says that lubrication to the front shaft sliding sleeve fitting is FIAT Jota 1 grease.
The manual says the FIAT Jota 1 grease is lithium base grease N.L.G.I. No. 1.

N.L.G.I. is National Lubricating Grease Institute. https://www.nlgi.org/ (The No. 1 is thickness rating).

I also could not see it specifically on any maintenance schedules but mine show lubrications normally at 6,200 miles. But of course would probably do at oil changes.

I am certain that others have favorite items they use. I just use synthetic.

Also to spice things up, it says the universal joints take FIAT MR 2 grease which is shown as lithium base grease N.L.G.I. NO. 2.

Unfortunately what the 30/40 year old manuals recommend likely is not what new bearings and universal joints come pre-lubed with. There are compatibility issues with older formulations and modern grease type so its best to purge whatever is there if you do not know for certain what grease formulation was used originally.

Here are the links to various Grease Compatibility Documents/Charts.
