Hello everyone,
I just started driving my '77 1800 with a 32 carb daily this past month and all the sudden today she wont idle. (I have been giving her plenty of time to warm up and cool down every drive.) I pulled up at a light today and next thing I know she will not idle. Also a red light went on in the tach, the tach itself wont work, and the turn signals wont work. I was able to limp the car back to my friends place by keeping the revs above idle.
I want to say that something is going on with the carb but my friend thinks its something to do with the alternator. He is more mechanically declined then I am. The car will run it just dies at idle. I recently replaced the diaphragm for the choke and the choke seems to be working fine.
I am still green to carbs but I want to learn. Does anyone know someone around Charlotte that knows anything about these fiat carbs? Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is other then the carb?
Thanks, Matt rhenry06@jcu.edu
Wont idle weird electrical Please help.
Re: Wont idle weird electrical Please help.
your carb has an idle cutoff solenoid on the left side. It has a single wire connected to it. With the key on, engine off, disconnect the wire, then touch it to the solenoid terminal. You should hear a click. If not, test for power.
The red light in the tach is the charging system warning light, when it's lit the alternator is not charging. Since you have some other issues, I'd take a close look at the fuse box. It's common for the fuses to get loose and corroded. Clean the fuse tips and receptacles, then pinch them together to make sure the fuse is tight.
