Fiat exhaust manifold

Post by Hvnfn »

Ok, I am thoroughly confused about the exhaust manifold options for these cars... Would someone please slap me with some knowledge?

My car has an exhaust manifold that goes from 4 ports to 2. The downpipe consists of two pipes going to 1. Does this make it a 4-2-1 exhaust? If so, I am really confused, because this is the stock exhaust on this car...

Wasnt the '79 spider 2000 supposedly equipped with a 4-1 exhaust? Therefore allowing the 4-2-1 setup to be an improvement? did the '79 cars ever come with a 4-2-1 or is my understanding of 4-2-1 completely wrong?

First - you are absolutely right - in most of your statements.

Yes

Well, this is the part where I'm struggling.... the 79 Spider were supposed to have a 4-1 system, if you are not the original owner of the car I suspect that somebody has done an improvement.

No, they weren't. Well, the builders were italians.... but I think either some previous owner has changed your exhaust setup or (drumfill....) what month of 79 is your Spider? Is it FI or carbed? What carb? You must know that they did change the year shortly after the summer holiday break. Look at the inside of your drivers door and tell what month your (probably) 79 Spider was built. It may be the 1980 series.....

Thanks for the reply!

I would assume that the previous owner did swap it out for the 4-2-1... When I bought the car, they told me that it was completely stock. It had the crappy intake and carb with the million and two vaccuum lines. then again, it is possible that what you say about the year is true... it could be a 'tweener'. I will check out the month when I get out to the car.

I am thinking of cutting the cat out of the system and re-routing the exhaust to the passenger side in front of the rear wheel... I am just not sure how that would look yet. At least, now I know that I have the better breathing manifold on here and saves me the money for the setup so I can spen more on the muffler.

Then again, not having a cat would mean NEVER getting through emissions again... not that IU think I could after removing all of the emissions stuff! :) But it runs so nice now!

i believe the 4-1 was stock for all '78 and '79 Spiders. shoot me if i'm wrong.

the 4-2-1 would be a desirable upgrade, and one that i frequently recommend to guys looking for a mild performance boost. if you are unhappy with it, i can certainly swap you for a 4-1 system that i recently tore off my '80 (on purpose).

dumping the cat does more than invalidate emission tests. not that I personally care....but some here would be quick to remind that it is also against federal law (as if the feds are gonna come check). there are modern cats that do not restrict performance and keep you "in" with the feds. Personally- I went another route.
