I'm replacing the booster in my car and had a question about this plastic cover/cap/cup thing. Is it just for protection during shipping or must it stay in place when I fit the master cylinder?
I got the pushrod almost to spec but its basically bottomed out on the threads so no more adjustment.

It is the actuator adjustment and it is important to get right. Too far in and the pedal will travel to far with not enough effect. Too far out and the brakes will lock up as the pressure builds and cannot release.
Unfortunately, I know way too much about that damn nut.....

As I recall, you need the plastic piece to keep the adjuster rod located in the center.

Re: Brake booster replacement
I have taken more than one booster off that I am confident are original and that plastic cup is in all of them. I looked in the Fiat Repair Manual and it is shown in the booster pictorial diagram as item 40, guide bushing. I have always installed them when replacing the booster. The opening of the cup faces out of the booster.

Any chance you could post that page from the manual?spider2081 wrote:I have taken more than one booster off that I am confident are original and that plastic cup is in all of them. When you say "opening" faces out, do you mean the inside of the cup? Or do you mean the hole in the centre as the opening?

the back of the cup should fit against the seal, so when you look at it installed, you should see the inside of the cup.
