HELP! Heater/defrost fan is going on a holiday

Post by SpeedySpider »

My heater / defrost fan keeps squealing in my 81 spider. The button only works in one of the 3 positions now (3rd one being off obviously :P ). I'm assuming this means is probably not gonna work at all pretty quick and I kinda need it where I live! Lol how do I fix this :S
Thanks! -Kate

That's what mine before it died. That was about 10-12 years ago, never did get it fixed.

page 4 has photos of the heater box and some tips.

Fixing the fan motor is ez, accessing it is the more difficult part. Search my posts, I think I did a pictorial on the fan motor. As I remember, there are 3 tabs that need to be straightened, then separate the motor. The shaft spins on bushings, when dry they squeek. I used white lithium grease to lube mine. Fine sandpaper cleans up the contacts and removes any rust on the magnets and windings.

Working at one speed only could be the 3 position switch or a connection on it. You can usually pry them up out of the console. i think the center wire is power from the fuse. Jump this wire to one of the other wires should make the fan run. The other wires are the hi and lo speed wires.

Like the previous post, I too have disassembled my fan motor, cleaned and lubricated it. It has worked a couple years now noise free,

Does anyone know how to post a picture on the forum? Mine went on holiday as well and I pulled it out and the plastic disc that covers the motor is black and melted. Wanted to post a picture. Can you buy just that part or do I need too get a new motor?
