Click/knock noise

Post by NickFerrell »

I have a knock that I cannot seem to diagnose!! I've looked at almost everything and I do not want (cannot afford) to throw parts at it. Whenever my passenger side front wheel goes into a pothole (even slowly) there is a single knock. I cannot figure out the source! Anyone had this experience?

My first thought is a bad ball joint. Jack up the passenger front until the tire is about 6 inches off the ground. Place some jack stands for safety. Put a pry bar or 2x4 under the tire and lift up and down. You or a helper needs to get under the car and observe the ball joints for any movement. If not a ball joint, look for play in the control arms and front sway bar.

Also check the 4 bushings and brackets on the sway bar. I have seen the chassis mount bushing crack the frame or strip the bolts. Check the A-arm for the same issue.
