Running hot

I have a 1982 124 and with normal driving it stays at a constant temperature. If I sit too long at a light or drive on the interstate the temperature raises about 20 degrees but doesn't over heat. Seems strange to me and after normal street driving it will cool back off and stay at a certain temp. This all happened after I changed out the water pump so I have a small concern about the new pump.

Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? Should I be concerned or just accept a new normal?

what temp do you consider normal? the fan should cycle on at 195 and drop the temp to about 185

My gauge doesn't have temps just a line. Normal is just below and when it gets hot about 1/8 inch above.

Your are correct the line I mentioned is the 190 degree line. Normally it is just below that unless as mentioned above. I will take it out and drive it for a bit and then stop and let it idle to check the if the fan is coming on or not. Thanks for the help!

The fan wasn't turning on so that was it. Thanks for the help!

I take it back. The fan is running but it is still running a little hot at times. Any other ideas?

Set all the heater controls forward, take the rad cap off, get the front of the car up a bit, and run the car untill any air has burped out of the rad and you can see the coolant flowing in the rad.
If it is old, good time to flush with new 50/50 mix.

I would also flush out all the old coolant (if not already done)
