Lemons race at CMP....Day One

Post by ga.spyder »

We got to the track on Thurs. night.I offloaded the car and drove it around the grounds to warm up the fluids. As soo as I parked in our garage stall,I spotted a oil leak from the pan.I patched her with JB weld, changed the tranny and diff fluids. and left.
Friday ,I get there before daylight and run the car.Oil leak...fixed! New problem, water leak.Ends up being a cut in bottom hose.Cut off a 1/2'' and clamped back....fixed! I drew first driver out.Cool morning and the car felt good. However,I couldnt get full throttle.I ran a couple of 1:19 laps which is very respectable times. Then the troubles begin. They kept playing with the dual IDF's and the times got slower and slower. At one point we were running 1:30's!!I would pull plugs, one perfect and 3 black as coal. They started changing jets,etc..Then timing. The car got a bit better ,but no full throttle.
Warning...unpopular statement! The dual carb setups look and sound great but they are a piece of crap.Temperamental, inconsistent ,hard to tune.Put my F.I stock car on track with this stripped racer and I would blow its doors off! I am so frustrated with this thing. Now the talk is to put a throtte block so we cant get full throttle. In a race car? Sorry...had to vent.
Tonight ,the town of Camden blocked off city streets for a parade and huge street party. We had 2 goddesses in white gowns ride in our ''olive oil'' special.Virgin and Extra-Virgin were awesome. The city lined the streets to watch the parade and huge party with live bands playing. It was awesome.Cars and teams in full costume.I wouldnt know where to begin to describe the things I saw.I will post pictures next week.
Tomorrow, the race begins.I am not that excited about driving to stay on track and make laps.We have decided we cant compete with speed so we will go for reliability....

Sorry to read about all the troubles Craig, but at least is sounds like it's a party atmosphere if nothing else.
Had IDF's on the car years ago and I guess I just wasn't smart enough to get them running right. I'm happier with the single 34ADF now. Hope things go well and you give it your best shot. Look forward to reading how the car runs.

I was awfully judgemental on the IDF's,mostly out of frustration. While other teams are practicing driver changes, pit stops,etc... we are playing with freakin' carbs! If someone has a handle on the duals ,I am sure they can be a great setup. Our problem is we dont have a handle on them.I think for our purposes a single 2 barrel carb or (Please God) fuel injection would be much better. We are already one of the least powerful and oldest cars out there. We need reliability.
Lemons racing is an absolute blast, though.I wouldnt trade the weekend for anything.I have a 1000 new friends, who are probably all hung over at this time! Our garage mates have aBMW with a tap in the trunk.Beer?Oh,no...it is dispensing carbonated lemon-flavored moonshine out of it.Seriously!!
