Carb Replacement
Carb Replacement
Mike Bouse, this question is to you! As an owner of a 1979 spider, I am looking for the better performance out of it also. I read several chains ago about you using a 32/36 DFEV carb. Did that work out OK? Heard of a throttle linkage modification that had to be made. I am in possession of an intake mainfold from an 1800 CC. Anything a novice needs to know before paying $300 for the carb?
I got the opportunity to drive Mikes car, and it runs good. A definate improvment to the old carb! You will need to make a cover for the EGR passage that will be uncovered with the different intake.Youll need a new airfilter assbly, and a re-plumb to the scavenger hose. Also when the intake is off is a good time to replace the hoses on the oil scavenger at the bottom while they are accesable! I also cleaned up the ring terminals at the starter and alternator. Wheres Mike?
OK Dave, followed everything you posted (and I do really appreciate the quick reply!) except one: the oil scavenger. Again, my newness to Fiats shows. What is it and where is it? Also, any particular port on the manifold need to go to the brake booster? Or can I just take my pick (the shortest being the most logical)?
I was taking a nap. Or was that, I was pulling parts off a '74 parts car?
James, I have a all-but-new rectangular air breather (they call 'em "performance") ready for you. Including shipping $15. it is the Vick Auto # 29-7311, which lists in their catalogue for over $65 plus shipping. You need this unit for your new carburetor....and this particular one will save you over $50.00. It is from the above mentioned parts car i just acquired. Less than 500 miles on this one. send me an email if you want it.
Now, to answer your question...my wife just drove my car the other day, and complained. "Your car goes faster than mine; it is quicker off the line than mine." "it pulls better than mine" "No wonder you leave me at the intersection!" "FIX THIS ISSUE".
No greater testimony than to have your wife tell you to go buy hundreds of dollars worth of performance parts to make her Spider fast and quick like yours!!
By Scavenger hose, what dave is referring to is the two hoses you cannot see when the intake is on the engine. the crankcase vent hoses. $12-15 at Vicks. Also, while there, check and clean your starter connections.
getting your emission choked 2L intake off will be a pain. Remember that there are seven fasteners in removal, not just six. You may have to remove the timing belt cover to see the front most bolt.
Don't throw away those emission control parts! Our brothers and sisters in smog control states can use them, and will be grateful if you pass them on to a Fiat friendly mechanic.
buy a good 1800 intake to block gasket and use a quality sealer. i failed in this step and have some minor coolant leak issues.
decide if you are going to loop your water choke hoses together, or how you will plug those ports. i am sure the new carb you purchase will be an electric choke.
Are you planning on immediately replacing the exhaust manifold to a 4-2-1 unit off an older 73-74 Spider? might wanna start thinking of that change too. and while you are at it, replace that catalytic converter with a "test" pipe.
that, sir, is the short story. Would I do it over again? Wish i hadn't waited so long the first time around.

Again, I appreciate the help and advice. The PO of my car has already put on the K&N type air filter, and the water choke hose is already plugged (don't know why). I had planned on doing the starter surgery while there too. I actually performed the "brown wire surgery" earlier this week. Hey! Just like they said: brighter lights and faster wipers.
Question on removing the timing belt cover: does the radiator hose "tee" have to come off first? From looking at things, it appears so.
For now, I have to get a new alternator put on tonight, I hope. Got a stubborn bottom bolt.
As a new Fiat owner and a novice (but quickly learning) mechanic, I was hoping for more driving time than repair time. Hope I can get to that point before summer ends.

Change of heart!
Mike, I found a rebuilt 32 ADFA on the dreaded "evil bay" for $55. Could not turn that down.
Anyone ever done a swap over from cable throttle linkage to a (I guess for better words) the "rod linkage" on a 79 spider?
By the way Mike, the PO has already installed the 4-2-1 exhaust manifold with the "test pipe" and a cherry bomb; way too LOUD!! Entire exhaust system replaced front to back (poorly). Therefore I can't do any test runs on anything during off hours.
Anyone know the diameter of the original exhaust?
This web site has been invaluable to me learning more about the "strange little Italian car" that has some of the "prettiest lines ever drawn on paper and produced".

Stay with a 2" I.D pipe for the exhaust . If you want it a little quieter put in another resonator were the cat was along with a good muffler. I just think that they can never be too loud but thats just me. Is the carb just a 32 or a 32/36 had one of these on a 1608 in a 71 coupe thing screamed like a raped ape passed red line in first gear if you weren't ready for the shift to second fast enough. Mess around with jetting the carb as some times it will help out with some of the flat spots that i've found in certain cases with a used carb. A good shop should be able to help you with this.
sounds like you are well on your way. I've not experienced the throttle change over you are referring to. from the cable to the rod, right?
sorry, kan't help there. bet it won't be rocket science, especially if you remembered to keep your old carb and linkage.
while you have that + / - 1976 carburetor on your bench, might not be a bad time to put in a rebuild kit.

James, is there a reason you want to modify the linkage to the rod setup? Several people with the early model Spiders had an issue with the car bucking on slow take offs, sort of like a clutch shudder. The cable linkage would probably be a smoother operation. I did fabricate a rod linkage setup for my dual IDFs that works well. Even though it's not the same, it might give you some ideas.
