Painless Wiring Kit
Hello all,
I was looking for what ever information I could find pertaining to others experience with replacing the wiring harness using Painless wiring kits. I found a couple related links including this one
http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic ... ess#p24162
I was not able to access the pdf file that was mentioned. Seems it is no longer available at the link listed. I was hoping someone may have it available elsewhere?
Currently the harness is laid out threw out my car but nothing has been connected yet. I will document the process and post the process if there is interest.
Thanks
Rob

Re: Painless Wiring Kit
Hey Rob, is your Spider fuel injected? I've had several requests from FI owners to update my article for their cars. Any additions or corrections to the article would be appreciated.

Re: Painless Wiring Kit
Thanks A.J and Bernie,
I've only had a chance to glance over it so far and I must say NICE job Bernie. Sadly no I do not have FI on my spider, it is an oversized single weber. I am however interested in converting to FI in the future. If / when I do I will be sure to document the necessary electrical changes.
Also I have selected a different Harness. I'm using the 14 circuit Micro Remote Mount Harness, P/N 10130. I selected this one because the fuse panel is considerably smaller than their standard unit. I liked the idea of it taking up less space under the dash. Sense it is a remote mount unit the wires are longer to accommodate placing it in the trunk. Looks like there would be more than enough wire to do this. However with the fuel tank, the fuel pump, and the battery there I thought I would mount the panel in the original location.
I was asked why do this. In my case a previous owner had hacked away at the original harness under the dash. I had straightened it out but over time the wire throughout the car had corroded and become brittle causing all sorts of problems. I didn't want further electrical issues, thus it is time.
Thanks again guys
Rob

Re: Painless Wiring Kit
Hello, and thanks again for the help.
I've been studying the Following documents.
Painless Wire Harness Installation Instructions for 10102 & 10130,
Bradley Artigue's wiring diagrams for the 1969-1973 & 1977 FIAT 124 Spiders,
Bernie Seneway's Installation guide for the 10102 Harness rev. c,
Hayes Wiring diagram for the 1975 FIAT Spider
and I have some questions. On page 10 of Bernie's installation guide there is a chart pertaining to the FIAT ignition switch and the Painless harness. I see RED #934a & RED #934b listed under the Painless column, thing is Painless only lists a single RED #934. Am I to create a jumper which will connect both FIAT terminals to the Painless #934 circuit?
Thanks
Rob

You got it. I seem to remember two big red #934 on my harness, but no matter. Won't give any tech advise until rehydrated and rested 10.5 hrs. from Nashville. woof.

Re: Painless Wiring Kit
First a big thanks to Bernie, for all of his help.
I'm in the process of creating a wiring diagram that depicts the Painless 10130 harness in my 75 Spider, as I install it. So far I've found that the Painless 10130 harness is really close to the 10102 harness Bernie used in his documentation. SO much so that I'm using his article as a basis for the install. I hope to be able to share the diagram when I'm done. Currently it is neither accurate or complete.
Thing is I've run into some snags, I'm looking for help, and I don't want to lean completely on Bernie. It's not fair to him, just because he wrote the article, to be bothered by this. He's been a great help, I just don't feel right asking him for all of this help when I could be asking the forum.
A little background, I've owned this car for 30 years... can't believe that... It is the first car I purchased. Over that time much has changed, and I don't remember it all. The car has been sitting for some time and now I'm picking up the project again. More on all that later, elsewhere, etc.
Currently I'm getting tripped up on the Instruments and the Alternator.
My alternator is not original. I found this article
http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic ... tor#p94799
my old alternator looks like the old black one in that article, the current one looks similar to the new one in that article but I don't believe mine has a built in regulator. I'd post an image but I haven't figured out how. I'd like to know what my alternator is. That is I'd like to know how big it is ?A, weather or not an external regulator is necessary and weather I should replace it with another. My guess is that I need an external regulator for this one. The original harness hasn't been in the car in a couple of years, and the regulator was in the car but I can't remember if it was hooked up.
so.. can someone post a link to "how to post an image" on this site.
Thanks
Rob

Re: Painless Wiring Kit
Hello all,
looks like it is only 42-45 amp, externally regulated, so going to replace. Taking suggestion for new alternators, internally regulated, 2 wire, and higher amp rated.
Also looking for new headlight switch, would like to keep it as a toggle switch similar to the original. Haven't been able to fined a source. Lots of on-off-on switches to be had, but I haven't been able to find a nylon on-on-off or an off-on-on. Does anyone know of a source for these?
Thanks

Re: Painless Wiring Kit
I'm using the same kit, just wondering if anyone knows what wires go to the alternator and where?
I have a '79 124 and the 55 amp alt. With an extra spade by regulator wires. Also, how to set up the dash light to indicate low charge?
Thank you kindly
Mike
