Unable to remove alternator bolt.
This is for the spare engine. I want to start cleaning it up and getting it ready.
The alternator bolt will not budge... no amount of heat, WD-40, Rust penetrating oil, etc. will make it move... I can move the alternator. Bolt seems to be frozen against the oil filter base/housing.
So either I cut the alternator or the base... What is easier to replace later? What if I end up cutting the alternator and the bolt still does not come out? I loose the alternator AND the base... Any suggestions?

Re: Unable to remove alternator bolt.
Are you heating the area that has threads?? Have you wacked head of bolt with a big hammer and a drift?? Smack mount where bolt goes thru. I would not cut anything. That will come out. Not sure what you are using for heat, but you need a torch, get the bolt head glowing red. Are you trying to turn it with a nice long breaker bar??
THat WILL come out. Have faith.

Re: Unable to remove alternator bolt.
Did you get the nut off the other end? If not, be sure to do that first, and then smack the bolt from the back side (may want to leave the nut partially on to keep from damaging the threads).

This site has a few other tips. Good luck wachuko!http://autorepair.about.com/u/ua/quickt ... trants.htm
Re: Unable to remove alternator bolt.
Cut or grind the head off the bolt, then try to knock it out with a punch. Thats what I'd try first anyway..

Re: Unable to remove alternator bolt.
Thank you all. I will try a few of those suggestions.
Yes, big breaker bar... but afraid to break the block if... Heater gun, not a torch. I will try the torch and make that puppy glow red. Nut on the other end is out, will put the nut on it and wack the s* out of it.

If you have a good impact wrench they are much better at breaking loose rusted parts than a long breaker bar. Thats always my first step. Good luck!

Re: Unable to remove alternator bolt.
Jaime - Here's one more technique that has worked for me - especially for the removal of the big centre nut on a FWD drive axle. Get a piece of 1" steel gas pipe at least 12" long and slip it over the end of your 24" breaker bar to make a bar 32-33" long. The extra leverage is incredible and it beats the impact gun hands down. Obviously, red hot can't hurt either. Good luck!

First attempt was with the impact drill... no luck.redcars wrote:If you have a good impact wrench they are much better at breaking loose rusted parts than a long breaker bar. Thats always my first step. Good luck!
Tomorrow I will apply a torch to it and hit it from the other side. I need to remove the oil sensor to avoid missing the bolt and smashing that sensor...
For a breaker bar I am using a 40" long 1" black iron pipe.

Re: Unable to remove alternator bolt.
an impact drill has nowhere near enough torque for a bolt that size

Re: Unable to remove alternator bolt.
Yup, ask me how I know... LOL I used it more to try to get the vibration to break it loose. Going F/R, but no luck. With the breaker bar it felt like I was going to rip the whole base from the engine block. Heat man, real heat was my mistake. The heat gun was nowhere near the temp I seem to need on that bolt to get it to loosen up.So Cal Mark wrote:an impact drill has nowhere near enough torque for a bolt that size
And Mark, can't wait to order the header/exhaust system and the dual carb and intake manifold setup you have.

Re: Unable to remove alternator bolt.
I would want you to smack the head of the bolt...a drift of some sort will make it easier, and don't be shy about it. If you pound the threaded end put a nut over the thread to keep from mushrooming them.

Re: Unable to remove alternator bolt.
It will be easier to remove the nut off the back first, opposed to trying to get the bolt head to move first. Remember, right=tight, loose=left.
