Simple Questions

Post by Eastlight »

I have downloaded a Fiat Maintenance Manual and there are general knowledge questions I have, which I am having diffulty finding answers.
Here is the short list:
How much oil does the crankcase hold + filter? I.E. I am changing my oil so would like to know how much to buy in addition to that I already have on the shelf. Someone should have a list of this stuff.

The carburetor is supposed to have ID on it so I can tell what size it is. All I can find is "Weber - Made in Italy" and a number 24 in a circle on the firewall side. I'd like to join other Fiat owners that look at my car because they seem to know what it is immediately - and I forget. I cannot seem to find a replacement air filter for the small chrome "Sprint Performance" air filter. The paper filter only says "Made In Italy" on the rubber and I cannot even find one on the "Sprint" web site. Someone suggested I should change the whole thing for $30 - but I need to know the carburetor size.

My car does not overheat but there is no fluid in the plastic coolant reservoir. I think I recall the manual said it should be about half-full or full.(?) I doesn't leak.

A previous owner added a switch under the dashboard to manually actuate the radiator fan - why? How do I know if the engine sensor switch is functional? I'd like to get rid of the toggle switch and restore the cooling fan back to being temperature reliant.
Enough for now. Thanks in advance.

Hi Rod,
4 quarts of 20-50. Make sure you throw a zinc additive in there. You can pick some up at Pep boys. I too had the same fan conversion. Apparently the radiator fan switch went bad and the po was to lazy to do the correct repair. I think switching it back to original specs is a good idea. Ralph and Scott actually took care of mine. Hope to see you at the next breakfast. George

The carburator model Id should be on the head side, not the firewall side. It should be near the seam between the base of the carb and the midsection. It may be covered with gunk so you may need to wipe it off to see. It should have some numbers like 32 adf or 28/32 adha.

Sure the po probably took the lazy way out of fixing the thermostat problem but I did the same with mine because down here in south la it gets pretty hot one failed thermostat will cause engine damage and I didn't want to take the chance. More than once I had to sprint to the nearest water hose because the fan didn't kick on when it was supposed to. Your best bet is to keep the toggle and wire it correctly so that it is merely an override failsafe.

You most likely need to flush the radiator and replace what is probably a dead thermostat. It's a simple fix. The shop manual should have the instructions for replacing the coolant. Fill the overflow bottle after you change the fluid. Some have installed a fill kit on the heater hose to aid in filling up the coolant to the max. Some of the vendors have them. I know vicks has them.

Rod,

1. 4.5 QTS
2. Weber ID: Base of Carb facing engine or fender, I forget which I'm guessing your carb is either a 32 or 34 ADF
3. IAP used to sell the Sprint filters and I think they still sell the replacement filters.
The new square filters everyone sells are made in Chi** and are crap compared to a Sprint Filter.
In other words keep the Sprint filter

4. Put fluid in your overflow bottle
5. Try to rewire your radiator fan switch correctly and try to insert a relay into the circuit. really saves the fan switches.

Next time I see you I'll try to determine an easy fix for the wiring. I doubt Mastories wants antifreeze all over their parking lot.
Take care,
Ralph

By all means, get the original fan switch circuit operational but also keep the "override" switch that is installed. It's great peace of mind when stuck in stop and go traffic and watching the temp needle inching up because something is failing or not quite right that day!

Thank you everyone for replying to my post. You were all very helpful and informative. I am not inclined to work on the car in today's 28-degree weather (come on spring!).

Thank you all.
