Are KYB shocks good enough or do I have to buy the expensive Konis for a good ride?

I have KYB's and love them. You'll find quite a number here recomend them for daily spirited driving and a comfortable ride.
I don't know what they would be like on the track though.

Monroe Sensa-track (oil and gas) filled shocks are a very good ride and also inexpensive. One of your local auto parts stores will have them in stock or at their warehouse. Around $25 each.

I recommend the KYBs, and put them on all of the time. I think the Konis are too stiff for average street use. The KYBs are certainly stiff enough for spirited driving too

I'm finding my KYB GR-2s outclassed now that my springs have been cut slightly, resulting in a higher spring rate. The porpoising the front end does over irregularities is more severe and the body movements feel less controlled as the shocks struggle to keep up. The overall feeling is quite 'boat-like.'

I've just purchased Koni yellows which will hopefully go on the car in the next couple weeks and restore the ride control without being too stiff. I intend to run them on full soft, per other owners' recommendations.

If you are sticking with stock, uncut springs and favor comfort to performance, I found the GR-2s to be acceptable in that situation.

Well... not that I know of. But I do tend to get lost in the Fiat quite a bit exploring back roads, so you never know!

The ride tends to be somewhat floaty since the springs were cut... a friend even commented on the car's body movement when he was following me on the freeway recently. telling me it really bobs up and down a lot. From inside, I feel exaggerated up/down movement over uneven surfaces and dips in the road. Of course, the GR-2s could also be past their prime... not really sure when they were installed by the PO, but I assume it was within the past decade.

I also have lots of body roll, got a rear sway bar coming to help with that (and to help eradicate the excessive understeer), but I'm told the Konis also help in that area more than one would think. We'll see...

Got a deal on the Konis from a Tire Rack sale (under $100 each), and I'm looking forward to trying them out. The car is purely a sunny weekend toy, so I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of comfort for more handling prowess.

How much was your car lowered? Are you sure it's not sitting on the bump stops?
