Broken off rear bleeder

Post by zachmac »

 Well sure enough I snapped off a bleeder on one of the rear calipers. The other just hasn't been tried yet, but I am not hopeful. Now with the broken one on the bench i also have the tip of an easy out broken off in the busted bleeder

So, other than penetrating oil and heat (tried both already) shoudl I just get it to the local machine shop before I do more harm? Anyone know what the thread size / pitch should be (they are the original 8mm head bleaders).

Were you going to rebuild them yourself or install rebuilt calipers from a parts store? Rebuilt calipers come with new bleeders so you wouldn't have to worry about it.

Jeff, those little suckers... I have taken lord knows how many and seems I have way less than 50% success in getting those things out. I have had my machinist friend try the weld a nut on top trick and that sometimes does not work so he ends up putting the thing on the milling machine and milling the bleeder out. I put a helicoil in there, sorry can't remember the size, and good to go. Up here I'm not sure where to go for good re-builds at a decent price so I trade wood and installation fluid for machining services.
Good luck

Wow. Quite the ordeal to fix it. I thought you may be trying to get it out to put back in to a rebuilt caliper and wanted you to know that they came with new ones installed. Didn't want to see you tear your hair out for no reason. :)

Jeff,I feel your pain.I just went through that with the rears on my 76.I used heat and then quick cool ,2 reps and they came out using vice grips.Classic Ricambi sells replacements.I have had bad experiences wih heli coiled bleeders leaking.

Thanks to all who responded. I think I am just going to bite the bullet and buy two rebuilt units and move on. What a PITA!
