Speedo Drive

Post by SpiderJim »

Newish car dead speedo. Just replaced the broken cable (at the gage end) and also checked the gage itself. However no go when driving. Was underneath the other day to pull the drive gear out for inspection and guess what? The chassis is in the way not giving enough room to pull it out. Any ideas on what to do without having to pull the tranny. Is it as simple as undoing the tranny mount or similar then lever it over a bit. How deep is the gear inside the tranny housing????. Help!

I've swapped out the drive gear on my '70 spider, without removing the tranny, and it was bear. I loosened everything as much as possible and twisted and turned and pushed the tranny down and as far over to the opposite side as possible to get barely enough room to remove the drive gear. I think that there is more room to work with on the later model spiders, so maybe it will be easier for you.
