I received a new Saleri brand pump from Vick's and was not comfortable about a couple of things. The impeller blades are larger on the old one and have a seperate tapered seat. The new one has smaller, shorter blades and where the old one turns quite freely, the new one is sort of stiff to turn. Anyone have any experience with these? should I be concerned. I really don't want to have to tear it apart again if I don't have to.

Your old water pump is a GMB brand, and the best made water pump available for spiders. The new one is closer to the factory unit. Yes the new pump will be slightly hard to turn, the bearings and rubber seals are new. Both pumps are about the same with the exception of the impeller. It's been reported that the GMB impeller moves more water and provides better cooling, but the difference might be neglable.

The crutial thing to watch out for is during installation. The mounting holes are slightly larger diameter than the bolts and the pump can be moved from side to side slightly. You want to make sure the impeller does not contact the water jacket for the #1 cylinder, slide the pump to the left/pasenger/exhaust side.

Yep, heard the same good things about the GMB Pump. Apparently you want to make sure it's stamped Japan on it also.
Guess there are several countries of origin. Best of all you local AutoZone should be able to get it.

I've been reading a book about cooling system design. From what I've learned your new pump is a far superior design. With a solid plate on the back of the impeller any chance of cavitation is eliminated. The open design on your old pump will cavitate at a certain rpm. They usually design the open style to not cavitate at normal operating rpms but that style will cavitate at some point, most likely high rpms. When cavitation occurs, coolant flow stops completely. Any new pump should have some resistance from the seal.
