Door Panel Rebacking

Post by NitroDemon »

My original door panels backing board was absolutely rotten. So I decided to make new boards for them.. I've removed the fabric from the old backing and have already cut out new backs for them.. Problem is.. Staples.. Where on earth am I going to find 1/8th long staples to hold the fabric inplace with?? I've Checked Lowels and the smallest they have is 1/4, which is too large still.. Has anyone else tried doing this to save yourself the $400 bucks it could cost you for new replacements?? Is there possibly a Glue that would hold the fabric tight enough or is there anywhere I could find the correct stamples? Any Ideas would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

upholstery supply? Or go to a local upholstery shop and see if you can bum/buy some staples from them

3M makes wonderful products, available at Home Depot as well....

they have vinyl contact cement in a spray can... roughly $14 per can, and one can will do EASILY two door panels. in fact, if you spray the adhesive on the BACK side of the panel, just enough to hold the wrapped around vinyl... you should be able to get six or eight door panels from one can.

if you are not using a foam padding, those 1/4" staples are a PITA to work with. I HIGHLY recommend putting some foam padding between your vinyl and your backerboard ... makes for such a much nicer finish.

I believe if you want to use the adhesive type. Make sure you spray both items and let them get tacky prior to putting them together. It's just not a spray and get busy method.

Also, when your done redoing the door panels, Put some black plastic on the reverse side to keep it dry from now on. You can use a garbage bag that you slice open to produce a flat piece of plastic. Adhere it and trim it close to the edges. That will allow moisture to roll down.
