Rear storage area and speakers box
Rear storage area and speakers box
I have removed my rear seats and rough fit the rear storage area and speaker box. Nothing is bolted or screwed in yet but here is was I have done. I have no idea how speakers sound I have not put in stereo yet. I wanted to see how the speaker box would fit before removong everything and running new wires. I think some smaller speakers ( 5.5 round) would have worked better but this system was given to me by a friend. Any opinions on what to do with the back panel. Should I make it a darker black, cover it in same carpet, or leave it as is. Also any idea on where I can find the metal strips that go on the bottom panel .
Thanks

Looking good, maybe strips of aluminum or the old school universal trim that they used to add to the sides of cars, (it it's still available in anything put stick on plastic)?

Taking a good picture back there with roof up or down is a PITA. Such a small space.

How / where / what / ... tell me more regarding the plastic covers for the seat belt retractors!
What is the grey material you used to cover the wood? Did you use wood, or MDF?
The 'depth' of the seat back for the speakers - does the top fold over/block the speakers?
The package shelf - storage underneath? If so, how much? Does it latch?
What is the structure, and mounting for underneath/behind?
thanks for the tips & help - it looks GREAT!

THere is another post tha shows the rear panel with out the speaker of bottom panel.
http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7637
The rear panel came out of 83-85 fiat spieder or whatever they where called then.
I made the bottom panel and speak box the speakers barely fit in the box when the top is down it sits just above the box.
I used plywood with carpet from homedepot to cover them
There is a little room for storage . The bottom panel sits on the hump where the tunnel goes under neither. Its a few inches deep in there. Should be able to fit a tool bag there and a raincoat. It does not latch yet.
The rear panel fits under the roof parts and there are a few screws in the bottom. The bottom panel and speakers are not secured down yet. I am waiting to redo capets before bolting everything down. Everything sits in place very tight. I all most had to redo the speaker box becasue it barly fit in there with the carpet on.
and thank you

Re: Rear storage area and speakers box
I installed a 'system' in one of my Spiders once... (I was young )
Let me just make a point about the enticement that provides some punk-kids with blades to slash your top! Even when the doors were never locked, they didn't even bother to check; they just cut the top.
If / When I put another stereo in one, I'll make sure it's well hidden... and doesn't look cool.

Jsdieter,
They are 6x9 I have not installed an amp. The system is the $80 or $90 Sony Package deal from walmart. Stereo , 2-6x9 and 2-6 inch round speakers for the front. It sounds pretty good. Even at 70MPH with roof down you can hear it.

I live in Florida and dont take the car out of the warehouse much when I do I usually stay near the car. IF i do run into a store I leave the roof down I figure I would make it as easy as possible for someone to grab what they want. The stereo has a removable face plate. The speaker box that is installed in the car was a practice box to see if i could make it look right. it actaully came out good. It is not bolted down and just held in place by a tight fit. So it can be lifted out with a good tug. I made it so I can remove it easily for when I redo the carpet in the rest of the car. The speaker wires have a connector that can be seperated about 6 inches from the box. I am thinking about redoing the box, removing the grills, recess mounting the speakers and covering them back up with a material that would look like the carpet. this way it would look like it is part of the interior to non-spider people. I also thought about going to the junk lot and finding some 6x9 grills so they look like some no name speakers. Today was the first time i drove it to work. The federal builing I work in is not in the best part of town. I was able to park it right in front and left the roof down. Of course there where 4 armed Federal Officers working the front desk today. I felt the car was safe.

Re: Rear storage area and speakers box
I'm sure you take every precaution. I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't a good idea. Just one more thing for others to consider if they choose to do something similar.
FWIW: I think you've done a beautiful job, and I'm encouraged now, having decided previously to turn my back-seat into a shelf.

Thank you. Just a helpful tip. The width of the back area in the width part is 50 or 51 inches. Since the bottom part was also just a pratice run to see what it would look like. I used a scrap piece of plywood that was 48 inches wide. I centered the wood and cut the sides. The little bit that was missing in the front corners can not be seen by the way the carpet is folded over the wood. I am not sure I might still have the paper templet I made in my warehouse I could take some measurements if you want them. It is pretty easy because of the angles it I had to trim it up a few times.
