Transmission fluid too high

This is strange. I am just doing some basic checks on my new Spider.

I checked the manual transmission fluid level by removing the bolt on the side of the box.
About a quart of fluid drained out! The level is supposed to be right at the thread level.

Really strange. The area near has a bunch of caked on fluid. I'm not sure how they could get so much fluid in there. I wonder if there was a reason it had too much fluid.

I an assuming you are talking about the lower screw, and not the other screw above it. Agree with Mark that the upper screw was removed and used as the fill. Nothing like a quart of oil on the driveway.
Easiest way is to drain the oil and measure how much is there. Should be 1 3/4 qt. of GL-1 gear oil.

If someone didnt know which screw to use, makes me think they didnt know what gear oil to use.

yeah, the previous owners just took the poor spider to the Jiffy lube. At least they kept it maintained.

I'm learning to be more prepared with the bucket to catch the fluids. This one did spill all over the garage floor. Always a surprise.

I'm not sure that Jiffy lube carries GL-1 gear oil. I'd replace it if I was you.

If you do decide to change the tranny fluid, be sure to remove both drain plugs: the one on the gearbox lower cover plate, and the little square headed plug on the tail end of the tranny. The tail end doesn't hold much oil, but it should be drained out during a change.

Alvon, I'm fortunate at the moment to have the trans. on the floor of my shop. Should I pick the thing up and roll it around to get oil in the rear of the trans. and then check/top up after? Or does it migrate there anyway and the original fill level is fine?

You don't need to tip it. There are passageways that will let the oil reach the rear as the unit is filled. The oil level check should be done with the transmission sitting level.

Chris, Alvon is right. There is a passage way to the rear but it is drilled about 3/8" off the bottom surface, so it can trap some oil, but not much. opening the square screw will drain the excess. I'll bet most owner dont know about that screw on a oil change, not that it makes a lot of difference anyways.

can someone post a link of where I can get the GL-1 Oil. I've been searching and it's not readily available.

call first cuz it seems to be a regional thing ... one store here insisted i needed to buy a full case of six gallons (har har har) in order to get the gallon i wanted. another store, thirty miles away carries three-four cases on hand all the time... and gladly sells it by the gallon

I will call around to various Napa stores. I did call the Napa near work and they didn't have it, another place said they had it and then find out they just had GL5, another place said GL1 has been superceded by GL5

that is a common misconception about lubricants (mostly by those that no nothing about machinery, and only how to run the cash register). and it is a common answer by the clueless. fact is there are a whole lotta Fiats floating around this USA, disguised as New Holland Tractors. and there are bunches of other farm equipment needing GL1 lubricants.

DON'T make that substitution.
