Thanks. Let us know how the conversion goes. I may try it if I can't get my booster apart.

Wholly Crapoli  Act of Congress? More like a Act of God! That booster will not come apart for nothing! Short of taking the die grinder to it I think I tried just about everything a couldn't get it to budge at all. They must use a specialized press to get them apart. Something that twists the 2 halves while pushing them together. I see now why they're so damn expensive.

I did pick up a used one from a local friend. Not sure if it works or not. Question? Is it possible to test a booster while its out of the car? Maybe by hooking the vacuum up and manually depressing the plunger to see if it leaks?

Well, at least I don't feel so bad, I'd have felt stupid if you said it was a piece of cake. I ended up taking the angle grinder to mine to get the rod out.

If you go up a few posts, you'll see that I'm converting to manual brakes like Denise. You need the rod from the booster for the conversion. The rest is in the trash.

The angle grinder made it easy to get it apart. The booster was useless anyway, since the diaphragm was busted. What do you think of the brakes after you eliminated the booster, Trey? I'm running Feroda racing pads on mine and it stops beautifully!

Trey, let us know how the proportioning valve works out! And how you went about installing it.

I haven't taken any of the master stuff apart at all yet, and honestly brakes are my weakest point, but where exactly does the booster get its vacuum from? I can see a line going to the engine on my mitsubishi, but I can't seem to find anything of the sort on the Fiat. I have one strangely capped off line coming up from the carb...but that doesn't have anything to do with it does it?

boost vacuum comes from that garden hose sized rubber tube connected to the intake manifold.

It's back togeather and stops! I haven't gotten to drive it too much yet, but it doesn't seem very hard at all to stop, (maybe I should bolt down the seats and mount some belts before doing panic stops)? Also, I had purchased the master to reservoir hose from IAP, (blue braided stuff). It seemed to fit a little loose on the nipples and even with clamps it kept leaking. I bought some from Performance Fiat and the problem is solved. It fits tighter and no more leak, just thought I'd mention it incase anyone else had the same problem. http://www.performancefiat.com/catalog/ ... cts_id=262

Thanks for the info on the brake hose. I need to get some and I don't want to buy the wrong stuff. I'll just go directly to Performance fiat. :P

Trey,

I'm assuming that engine bay shot with the orange hoses is your new 72.

Does anyone know why the early cars had that extra brake valve/part mounted on the drivers fender. What exactly does it do, and why would fiat elimenate it on the later cars? I removed one from a 76 parts car and I can't find any mention of that part in any Fiat manuals, parts catalogue, or publications.

I think it is supposed to turn on the brake light if there is a problem with one brake, (uneven braking). It has a wire going to it. Could also have a propotioning valve build into it?

I don't know what that thing is on the early cars. It's not showing up on the wiring diagram either, but my 71 and 72 have it. Trey, I think you'll like the brakes without the booster once you get used to it.
