I am trying to pull from the wealth of knowledge on this site so again I am asking for advice and experience. I am going to be buying a new exhaust for my 79 Spider. I want something that sounds nice and may add a few more HP to her. I will probably want to replace the whole manifold, get rid of the cat, (hangs way too low and no emission issues in NH), has a nice chrome single or dual tip. Any advice, experience is greatly appreciated.
My experience so far has been fruitful. My '80 has received an ANSA dual tipped "free flow" muffler and replacement exhaust pipe with resonator from VICK AUTO. Ahead of that, I recently replaced the 26 year old cat with a test pipe from BRUCEs.
I truly love the sound now, and the elimination of the cat (last item to be replaced) seemed to do the most performance wise.
Some time soon, I would like to try a 4-2-1 manifold to complete the process.
I am experiencing some exhaust system vibration and rubbing since replacing the cat. I am looking to add an aftermarket bracket to the exhaust pipe.
I think it was most fun to change these parts out one at a time to get a feel of what each one "added" to my driving experience. Had I done it all at once, I don't think I would have known which pipe did what for the overall change I presently enjoy.
as a very minor point to add in this conversation, I have found that almost invariably the addition of a simple hanger mounted somewhere under the 'rear seat' (basically floor to pipe) does wonders for eliminating chronic/periodic exhaust vibrations & rubbing.
I made my own 2" dia. exhaust for my '74 124 Spider w/ a 2 liter. I use a 4-1 header & the only muffler is a dynomax Ultraflow located in the stock rear muffler location.

The cheapest way is to add a stock 4-2-1 as the 4-1 is very restrictive. The ultimate is the earlier post and I'm saving my $ for a polished set.

mark, on the fuel injected 124 would i see a increase in hp with your headers and if so what's the numbers.
i am still looking into gettin the k & n set up for the air box
I haven't put a system on an FI car yet, nor have I done dyno comparisons. Seat of the pants evaluation shows substantial mid-range and top end gains in a carbed car, even with the optional catalytic converter. The scavenging effect is so good that rejetting of the carb is a necessity.
Sorry I can't give you firm numbers on the expected increase.
if it leans out a carbed engine what will happen to a fuel injected car my car runs good i pulled the plugs and replaced them today and they were clean by the chilton plug guild they would be considered normal

the stock converter won't fit my system. If you buy the complete system, a 2 1/4" cat is an option. The exhaust system consists of all tubing and hangers from the header collector to the rear of the car, including a polished stainless Magnaflow muffler
