Oil in carb breather
Oil in carb breather
Hello Spider-Fans, I am new to this web site as well as new to owning a Fiat. I recently purchased a 1980 Spider. The car had been sitting for quite a while. It would run as long as I poured gas into the carb. So, I purchased a new carb and I installed an electric fuel pump. (I am not a mechanic). Now, the car ran like a champ when I drove it around the block, but I noticed it started smoking when I got back close to the house. I pulled the breather and there was a lot of oil in it. QUESTION. Is there some sort of pvc or other valve that goes on that hose from the engine to the bottom side of the breather. I just ordered a manual for the car.
oil will get pushed into the air cleaner from excessive crankcase pressure. Check the oil level, if it's above the full line on the stick you're going to get oil in the air cleaner at high rpms.
If it is overfull, get underneath and look at the oil pan. You may see the oil pan crushed on the bottom. The #1 reason for overfull oil is to compensate for a broken oil pump pickup after the pan gets smashed.
If the pan isn't smashed, smell the oil stick. If it smells like gas, change the oil and fill it to the proper level.

How many miles on the Engine ? If over 80k you may want to start using the
Castrol high Mileage Oil it is very good stuff and has help a few tired Engines

If the car sat for a while maybe the rings are frooze if this is a issue
they may come loose after a few drives and the blow by will go away
maybe not .

Thanks Daniel for the info. The car only has 63K on the OD. Compared to the condition of the car (other than the rust), I would guess that the milege is correct.
I haven't had a chance to work on it anymore lately. Work, weather, and school have slowed me down. Looking forward to getting road ready though. Ken
