Cylinder heads

Post by Jim DeShon »

I am getting ready to pull my 1800 out of storage and tear the motor down in a couple of weeks. Can someone tell me which cylinder heads fit this motor and what the differences are ? As I remember, the last time I did valves on this thing [probably a dozen or more years ago], it had a couple of valve seats that were getting very deep. I think I'll just replace the head. ...J.D.

any of the 1800 heads will fit, but the emission fittings are different between some years. A 2L head will also fit, but will drop compression slightly and of course has a different egr set up than the 1800

there are two exhaust studs that are open into the cyl head where oil lays, between valve springs. If those studs are loose, or don't have thread sealer on them, you'll get lots of oil leaking there. You might also check the tightness of the cam box bolts, I use a spec of 18lbs of torque on them.

any type of thread sealant will work; gasket sealer, thread locker, etc and make sure the studs (not the nuts) are tight into the head. The two studs that go into oil are the 2nd from the front and 2nd from the rear of the head
