Help! Another FI problem

Post by Paingrin »

I know everyone must be sick of hearing about the FI system. But here's another one. My 80 Spider is having problems. Engine cranks, starts up, then dies. Over and over. Went through steps in FI diagnostic manual and it seems that the combination relay is not working. No clicking, no power going to fuel pump. Ran a jumper wire between power and output for fuel pump. With difficulty the car started and ran. Am I correct in assuming the relay is shot? Anyone know how to test the relay? I'd like to know before I buy another one (expensive) find it's not the problem and can't return it. Any suggestions would be welcome.

have you checked the intake boot to make sure it's attached and not split? If the AFM flap doesn't move, the pump circuit in the relay won't be activated. Since you have the manual, you'll need to verify power and ground on each circuit to the relay to confirm the failed part

Quentin,

Definitely try to open the AFM flap by hand to see if that is the problem, the fuel pump should run then.

If it does turn out to be the relay though, instead of buying a new one you should try going to one of our local pull a parts and getting the relay from another L-jetronic car (pretty much any BMW from the 80s and a bunch of other cars). Should be able to get it for a couple of bucks.
