I am rebuilding the transmission. All the manuals say to replace parts if worn. But what is worn?
I think I replaced the brass syncro rings just before I garaged the spider years ago. So...when I am looking at the rings, they look great, but compared to what? Is there a way to explain how to determine if they are almost new, medium worn or worn out.

There is about .5mm height of grooved thread in the area that contacts the inner side of the syncro sliders (which I am replacing with new ones), all four brass syncros are in exactly the same condition. Any help is appreciated.

You really make me feel like a wimp Pope. You're doing your transmission rebuild yourself, I wimped out and had mine done by Jon Logan.
Consequently, I can't help you.

I wish I could help too, but no experience on this one.

Soon, I can tell, after two family members learning to drive a stick shift this Christmas Vacation, Second Gear is getting rough to get into, so I gotta let the tranny spool down a second or two to pull 2nd gear so it's not so rough. I put in Vick's GL-1 about 1900 miles ago. Any additive suggestions? You gotta love that post title. Iron Butterfly anyone? ps. Who is Jon Logan and how can you get a rebuild from him?

I would strongly suggest no additives to GL-1 oil. Mark and I have been researching the engine and trans oil market and periodically report on new findings. Straight GL-1 is recommended by Fiat, which is basically straight mineral oil, maybe with some defoamers and such in there.
