New Exhaust

Post by Flyingthere »

Greetings all,
I need to replace my exhaust system and wanted to get your input on a great sounding yet cost conscious exhaust system, I do like a nice throaty exhaust, not the sewing machine whine. I will be attaching it to my OE 1.8 liter manifold. I also need to take into consideration the placement of the components ensuring I do not cause excessive heat in areas where I do not want, or the car should not have it. Please let me know what you think and suggest.

unless you are going to custom build a system you're faced with stock replacement parts with the exception of the muffler. No performance gains there, just different sounds depending on the muffler

I have a friend that has offered to build me a system but he wanted to know what kind of muffler I wanted to put on it. I really do not remember what the stock muffler system sounds like, is it quiet or does it have a little rumble?

MY '82 is bone stock and in my opinion, is pretty quiet. I can hear my radio very well either running around town or out on the highway. Well, not bone stock, the radio is aftermarket, but it's not beefed up at all.

Thanks Ron, I am thinking I would like to have a little sound. I guess I need to explore some custome options with my friend.

I bought a stock setup from IAP and was delighted to see it was an Ansa. My 72 came with two resonators and a muffler and it has a nice throaty sound. My 71 is sporting a dual tip Ansa and it is also throaty and a tiny bit louder.

If you don't need to keep your stock exhaust manifold for smog purposes... etc., I have a spare IAP header and down tube I'd part with for cheap $100.00. I was going to put it on my '74, but the performance gains aren't as huge over the 4-2-1 manifold as they are over the 4-1.

That mated with the ANSA exhast sounds pretty rumbly!

But the best system I've heard is the one SoCal Mark makes. Not cheap.. but holy cow! and its the coolest looking too! Mark's avatar is a picture of his header... That's what I'm saving my nickles and dimes for.

I have an Ansa muffler with no resonator and the stock Cat, and it sounds pretty good. It is not very loud, but it does have a nice throaty tone.
