Brake pedal feels funny

Post by BartusCompater »

Just today I resolved an issue with a bent clutch pedal. This may or may not have something to do with my next issue: The brake pedal.

As I drove home clutchless on the day that the pedal snapped I noticed that my brake pedal was feeling a little funny. The range seems to be limited, and instead of gradually reaching a stopping point as you apply pressure, it seems to just stop without any counter-pressure.

Additionally, I've noticed that my interior E-Brake light likes to stay on, and blink/flicker off and on as I'm going down the road.

I took her out for a spin just a second ago, and brought it up to about 40, and can say with quite a bit of confidence that it doesn't feel like the brakes are locked or applying pressure (at least not very much). Afterwards I didn't notice any brake smoke either.

My thoughts are that either

A) This could just be a wiring problem (the blinking light), and the pedal thing is in my head.
B) There's something up with the brakes that would cause the pedal to feel funny and the light to stay on and flicker while moving.

Is it possible that the issue with the clutch pedal messed around with some other stuff and caused this?

low fluid in the reservoir will also trigger the same brake warning light, as will a worn e-brake switch. I'd take a look at the reservoir, I'll expect you to find one half empty. That would explain the odd feeling brake pedal

Mark is absolutely right.. . Those are the two most common causes for the light being on.

..so, take a quick look at the e-brake handle. Right underneath it is a small pressure switch. If it is worn on the drivers side, then the brake handle isn't pressing down on the switch mechanism enough to keep the light off. If you apply pressure to the handle towards the passenger side of the car as you dissengage the e-brake, it will sit more firmly on the switch. If this is your problem, then the light will stay off.

Make sure to check if the rear brakes are working. Mine were kinda funny when the rear valve quit working.

My first thought was the little switch, and I tried pressing it down with my finger to see if it would turn off, but that didn't do anything, which was weird. This isn't a definite thing though, so I'll check again today.

Also, yesterday when I reinstalled the clutch cable I ended up taking the brake fluid reservoir off of the firewall so I could have slightly better access to where the cable slides in. A bunch of brake fluid leaked out while the reservoir was hanging off to the side. I didn't think anything of it because I assumed this was windshield wiper fluid or something. Shows how much I know. 8)

I'm gonna fill that back up and see where it goes from there.

The brake fluid was nearly at the "Minimum" mark. Filling that up did it. Thanks AGAIN!

Keep a close eye on it for a while. If it goes down again there is an issue!!
