I am getting ready to swap the tranny out of my '71, I have acquired a tranny out of a '75. I have read that there is an issue with swapping between early and late model spiders. This is what I found on mirafiori. "The flywheel and clutch sizes vary from model to model. In general the flywheel and clutch must be compatible with the transmission bell housing. Thus, if a late engine is bolted into an early car, the early type clutch and flywheel should be used. Some 1756cc and all 1995cc engines use larger flywheel bolts than the smaller engines. In order to bolt an early flywheel on these engines, the flywheel must be drilled for the larger bolts". The tranny from the '75 is currently out of the car with the bell housing attached and I didn't plan on changing the flywheel or clutch. Do I need to swap the bell housing from my '71 to the '75 tranny? Is there anything else I need to be aware of?

Re: Another Transmission Question
just change the bellhousing rather than redrill flywheels. You will lose the oil from the tranny when you remove the bellhousing

Thanks Mark! I was planning on changing the oil so that wont be a problem. So Cal Mark wrote:just change the bellhousing rather than redrill flywheels. You will lose the oil from the tranny when you remove the bellhousing
Re: Another Transmission Question
I could be mistaken, but my recollection is that the flywheel diameter was changed between the 1438cc engine (up to 1970) and the 1608cc (starting sometime in 1970). I think your 1971 may already have the larger diameter flywheel, and therefore the larger bell housing to go with it. You may not need to change the flywheel or the bell housing.
This came up for me when I changed from the original 1438cc engine/flywheel/bell housing to a 1608cc engine. I kept the smaller 1438cc flywheel so that I could continue using the smaller 1438cc bell housing. If I had used the 1608cc flywheel, I would have needed the larger bell housing.
I think that the 1.8L and 2.0L kept the same diameter flywheels and bell housings as the 1608, but made a change to 12mm mounting bolts for the flywheel at some point along the way. Again, I may be wrong. I'll try to check tonight when I get home.

Re: Another Transmission Question
Thanks Alvon! I will be sure to compare the two and change if neccessary. Where is a good place to get a clutch? I might as well change it while I am in there.

Have you dealt with Bruce yet? I got the kit (plate, disc and bearing) from him and it was good, price and quality wise.
