Craig Nelson: a hero for the ages.

My feeling is that the only other solution is to tear down a great running motor,to locate an annoying sound that goes away after a few minutes running.Not an option for me.I had a very experienced Fiat mech. listen to the motor when it first started doing it.He was stumped ,but guessed oil pump.We put a guage on it and the pressure was good,went for a test ride and it stopped before we got a mile from the shop.I took it home and changed the oil to check for metal. Nothing.Put in the Lucas and the sound disappeared for 1 year until the recent change(No Lucas).I know SoCal Mark and Ace have tried to locate the source of Rons with no luck.It obviously isnt a ''fatal'' sound as both cars run great,and have been on long trips this year.So $10 a quart(minus the price of 1 qt. of oil) is a bargain in my book!!!

ps...Mark ,any idea what is in that stuff? It seems the ingredients are a bigger secret than the Colonels chicken! It is huge at the dragstrip where nearly everyone uses Lucas products.

my '82 does the same exact thing. Runs great but wine when cold. I'm not too worried about it.

That is kind of odd that there are 3 cars doing that ,and all are 82's.I dont think I would worry about it either ,Trey.Mine has been doing that for a while now ansd I have put a bunch of spirited miles on it with no problems.Makes you wonder if it is a pump they sourced from somewhere different than from other years?

and why only '82's with this issue? hmm.... sounds lika design flaw, or other conspiracy. Or is it just a fuelie issue?

I don't know what this has to do with Craig Nelson (hero for the ages), but we definitely diagnosed the whirring noise on the Luxmore '82 as being from the oil pump (likely) or aux gears that drive it (unlikely). Ron was in the neighborhood yesterday, and we had an hour to kill, so we pulled the Aux shaft drive gear out for a quick test (the one that drives the oil pump), and buttoned things back up. Cranked her up for a brief few seconds, and she was quiet as she could be. Put the drive gear back in and cranked her up, and the whir was right there waiting for us.

The generally consensus was:
1) Let it whir, as long as it's got good strong oil pressure.
2) Buy a 2.0L oil pump to have on hand for eventual swap out when convenient
3) Use the Lucas additive if oil level ever drops down, to help minimize the whir -- Craig, you're stil the hero!

While we're on the subject of working on my car during my visit at Ace's: I've had a leak at the gasket under the cyclonic trap since I got the car. It wasn't bad, just enough to coat the side of the block without dripping. Good old Ace had a new gasket so we took off the trap and were shocked to see the amount of gunk inside. I mean it was caked! We cleaned it up, put it back together and when I checked it after the 100 mile trip back home, it wasn't leaking a drop. Yea!

BTW; Right next to the shop where Ace was having a windshield replaced on one of his other cars is a wrecking yard. Ace had seen a late model Spider in there ealier, so while we waited for his car I went in to check it out. It's an '82 with an almost complete engine and FI system. I plan to go back and pick up a couple of parts later this coming week, if anyone would like something, let me know and I'll check for it. Of note: it has electric windows and the emergency window crank is there if anyone needs one.

Way to go Ace and Ron.It is great peace of mind to know what that noise is!As long as I run the Lucas ,I dont hear it in my car. I recently cleaned out the trap on mine,as one of the hoses had split.It had some gunk but not really bad.It is on my list of periodic maint. now.Ron,I will email you re. parts car.There are a couple things I need.

I know, I found it hard to believe too! I can't understand why it was there, it's pretty sound and looked like it may have been complete when it went in. Now of course the interior is shot because the people do things like tear the door panels off to get to something. Under the hood is pretty complete though, except for the air flow meter which someone took the cover off and savaged the guts. They didn't take anything, just trashed it.
