Is There Anyone Who Lives Close Enough

Post by GOPAPA »

to take a Photo of their Spider on the Approach of this Tunnel Bridge ..
I have had this picture for a couple years and have not found out where it is and so maybe some of you from the the state that this is at,,, will know and share with us about it .
Better yet ,,Tell us if you have indeed driven over and thru it with your Spider.. But if no one has then I guess I will have to ask Pope to do his thing and put a little Spider at the approach for us all to see what it would look like to be cruising along on this "magical wonder" that crosses this mass of water.. Is it in Mass. ? LD

clik to bigger it ..LOL

I believe that is the Chesapeak Bay Bridge, connecting Virginia to Virginia. I travled it many years ago, but did not have a Fiat (was on a Honda 550).

Hey ! thanks Denice .. Now I got the whole "sha-bang" I wanted for years to be able to travel the Atlantic Seaboard but now know that I wont be doing it .. There's some mighty pretty sights to see and this is surely one of them and to be built in the 60ies is even more unbelievable.. What a price that would cost today.. glad they could do it back then as it is a very needed piece of travel..
Could you drive down or up "which ever" and take a picture of you and your Spider for us ,,,just about as you are entering the tunnel ? LOL LD

Sure, I'll get right on it. Why won't you be travelling to the eastern seaboard? It's very different than the west coast. You can actually swim in the ocean without a wetsuit.

Twenty-one miles from the mainland to the penninsula, and the second "span" was only completed a decade or two ago. Up 'till then, it was one lane in each direction! The only other way 'round was Annapolis, MD, hundreds of miles north.

There really isn't much to see when approaching the two tunnels by car; its not like an amusement park ride, where you get the sensation of driving down a hole in the water. Good thing! Otherwise, motorists would screech to a halt. Next time I'm down that way, I'll snap a couple for you.

There's a good History Channel presentation on this engineering marvel (shameless promotion of the Discovery Channel, a Maryland corporation), and if you ever make the trip, stop at the rest area in the middle; restaurant and gift shop.

BTW, I know a person who swam across this inlet! The Chesapeake is America's largest estuary; imagine the current flow in and out of that channel ...

The reason I wont be taking that trip to the east coast that I "did" want to is that first of all I sold the motor home and thats what I was going to travel in. You know, take your time and stop when ever and take in the sights . As I got older and retired I seem to like just staying home and doing the things that I couldn't before.. My wife has her sewing room and I have my trucks and cars to play with ,, huge yard to keep up and all the excersize I need ,,and I don't swim anymore and doubt if I have a suit ,,so that alone would not be good to get throwed in the slammer for swimming in the Atlantic with out one . LOL I do like to drive the Spider around the country here ,,maybe get a few groceries ,,short ones that is so the trunk dont bend the tops of the milk jugs.. he he LD

Does look that way doesn't it . I wonder if it has leaks down in there that they have to constantly pump water back out to the surface ? I have worked up high all my career but never liked it under the ground or water .. LD
