clutch cable broke but I made it home
I was on the way back from taking my kids home when my clutch cable snapped. I kinda freaked out . However I found that if I tried to put it in 1st it would move slowly then go into gear and I was off. Eventually I made it back home. I have never had this happen before but I am sure glad that it's possible to still get it going. Now did I hurt anything by doing this? I sure hope not!

you would only hurt the tranny if you were shifting without the clutch; it's hard on the synchros. When the cable breaks, it's best to do some diagnosis; if the ball end of the cable broke at the pedal make sure the pedal isn't cracked or bent. Ensure the ground cable from the floor pan to the trans is in good shape. Make sure the firewall isn't cracked where the cable passes through it

I have inspected the clutch fork pedal area and it looks good. I have a good ground and I also have an additional ground strap. The firewall had been damaged before. Now there is a 1/4 inch steel plate there where the cable comes through.
I drove about 10 miles like that. I hope I didn't do anything too bad but I had to get her home!

Motorcyclists used to be able to shift gears without the clutch by momentarily pressing the "kill" button while nudging the shifter to the next gear. I suppose the technique would work in emergency situations in a car by turning the ignition Off for an instant while shifting. It would be rather tricky to steer at the same time while reaching for the key, and not lock the column, either.
