If your Spider wont start

Then heres a tip that I learned from my Dad that could help you get it started all by your self . But first the story that goes along with it..

I was about 4 years at the time and my dad was starting the families 47 Plymouth . I remembered this story because the snow that year was over my head and I was cold and waiting to get in the car and I guess I paid attention to what he was doing to get it started. It was years later that I ask him just what was he doing on this cold day while the snow fell that I remembered only in part.

This is what he told me that happened and why he had to do what he did to start the car ,,

He run the battery down low trying to start the car and he had no extra battery . The car was parked at the end of a long drive way 1/8 mile from the house and no way could you run an extention cord for a charger . The road in front of him was an uphill slope and the car was backed up to an embankment so pushing the car was not a option . Even if he could push it by himself .
No one stopped and gave him any assistance ,,and what I seen him do that day I never forgot and accually have repeated what I learned from him with my 1956 Chevy and also with a friends car some years ago..

Now to make this more interesting and give you Spider Fans some thing to think about ,,you can write down what you think he done ,,Mean while ,,I am going to go install my new side mirrors on my 72 truck and will check back later today to see what answers you give Of what you think my dad did to get the 47 plymouth up and running on that cold winter day back in the year of 1948. Presuming he couldn't bump start it in reverse gear? How about warming the battery?

Reverse gear is all I can think of. This reminds me of Click and Clack the Car Talk guys I loooove listening to them!

Let's see.
1) Removed the battery, walked to the house, put it on the charger, grabbed the spare battery, walked back to the car, good to go.
2) Reached in the trunk for the jumper cables. Walked out to the main road, and waved the jumper cables in the air at each passing car until someone stopped to offer a jump start.
3) Jacked up one rear corner of the car. Turned the key to on, and put it in 2nd or 3rd gear. Put on a pair of work gloves. Grabbed the rear tire and gave it a spin over and over again until the engine cranked.

Alvon !! You have the right answer and now I got to ask you if you ever turned a wheel to start a car this way ? .. Better yet have you ever tried to start a Automatic transmission car this way .LOL Now that would be some turning .. Not that it matters much but I want to clarify that the car was a 1941 plymouth .. Now that you have read the answer down below ,,then you will know that like Alvon said ,,put the car in a forward gear like a higher gear and turn the wheel until the motor starts up.. never tired a reverse gear ,,but my guess is that low gears would be to hard to turn the wheel ..LD
