Everybody but me probably knows what this connector is - I need to move it to the rebuilt gearbox as the one on the rebuilt is in pretty bad shape. I'm guessing it's something to do with the backup light. How do you get it off to move it?

On the later ttransmissions that is plugged off. Your backup switch is further down with two spades. I have a transmission from a 1970 that I referenced. I dont know where it would connect to or if you even need it connected. Best to follow it down in the schematic

The switch for the backup light is on the rear of the transmission. Near the reverse gear (makes sense, yeah 
)
What you have there is a neutral position switch. It's emissions related. The system has most likely failed long ago and the only people that know about it and are smog techs are long since retired or in the afterlife.
Don't worry about it, just leave it disconnected.

Thanks Steiny,
I refurbished the rear switch - new wires, soldered connections and then encased in silicone rubber - so that should be good to go. I won't expend any more energy on the side switch.

Rich, it sounds like your question has been answered, but yes, that switch you point to is an emissions device switch on earlier Fiats. It engages off the 3rd/4th sliding shaft internal to the transmission and is meant to put the car into a high idle (1500 rpm) when the car is in those gears (and the clutch is engaged).
I'd just leave it as is, but if you really do want to take it out, some gentle tapping with a large screwdriver and hammer on those 4 cutouts in the outer ring usually goes the trick, or a pair of large vise-grips with some hammer tapping. It's sealed with a large copper ring between the body of the switch and the transmission case.
By the way, the two wires for this switch go through the passenger side transmission tunnel. From memory, one of them is light grey going to the switch on the clutch pedal and the other wire goes to ground, but don't hold me to that.

Thanks Bryan - I got it off using the hammer and screwdriver method and swapped them out - but, probably won't hook it up.
