Turbo kit for 1981 2000

Post by Swagel1 »

I'm brand new here and reaching out for help! I'm the orginal owner (42K original miles) of the above Fiat. The Turbo is leaking oil and need a kit or components to rebuild it. The follwoing is the info off of the turbo: IHI RHB6, spec II, LEG-1, serial #020716. Also need the bearing on the inlet side of the turbo. No luck anywhere in finding anything! The engine is pulled and this is the last thing to get'er back on the road.

Any ideas???? Thanks so much!

Update the turbo to something more modern (and most probably smaller and more efficient??), I hear that parts are non existent now?

Do a search here and send a pm/ email to kristoj (member name).John had his rebuilt a few years ago by someone in California.Maybe they are still around or have parts. Most of the turbo spiders have been changed to just fuel injection for the same issue you are having.Good luck.

I know this is a very old thread but I am hoping some one will read my post. I have a 1981 Turbo Spider which was relieved of the turbo components before I purchased it . I purchased it from a CL ad in another city and did not inspected until much later. When I did I discovered all the missing parts. I understand that these parts are impossible to find. I was hoping to find a drawing or diagram of the turbo components and their location. Second I want to find out if the turbo Spider used a unique exhaust manifold or was the stock unit modified.
And last is there a registry for these cars.
Thank you

I believe Allison’s Automotive has the turbo headers (or remakes) on his website, and the library at Mirafiori.com would be my first stop in the search for documentation on the turbo.

I might have a picture or two of the turbo setup and can look for you this weekend.

If you don’t hear back in a reasonable amount of time don’t hesitate to pm me.

I don't think so. It put your turbo in the front of the engine almost in your water pump.

Interesting, is that not where the turbo should go? The only (professionally made) 124 turbo manifold I have ever seen has the turbo hanging from the leading edge, near the water pump. I do see how this would become very crowded, very hot and very quickly but I never questioned it.

I’ll dig up whatever I have on the turbos and post what I find. It’s something I’ve always wanted to add to my car so I’ll be following this thread closely. If I recall correctly I have a four or five page document issued by FIAT that outlines the turbo setup. I’ll look for it (or better yet where I found it) and post an update.

At one point someone on this forum mentioned that the current turbo manifolds were made by SPA. Maybe that’ll help fortee9er find what he needs.

I understand that these parts are impossible to find. I was hoping to find a drawing or diagram of the turbo components and their location. Second I want to find out if the turbo Spider used a unique exhaust manifold or was the stock unit modified.
And last is there a registry for these cars.
Go too mirafiori.com, register as a user and then go into the library for the turbo info. The general service manual for late Spiders including your '83 also contains a turbo section. It too can be downloaded from the mirafiori.com library.

The exhaust system including manifold and downpipes are unique to the Turbo. Few Turbos got to much more than 40k miles. Most were converted to the more practical stock FI configuration when original components failed. Many of the conversions were poorly done and left the restrictive. turbo exhaust manifold and modified distributor in place. To discover the unique turbo parts, compare the two Spiders you own. The '81 and '83 2 liter Twin Cam engine with FI should be almost identical.

There is no Turbo Spider registry. If you want to judge originality, look on the underside of the Legend Turbo plenum for the serial number of the casting. They run from about 100 to about 2,000 in roughly the order of the build date.

Tim's Turbos in Falls Church Virginia is a possible rebuild source for the IHI turbo but even he will not be able to source many replacement parts. The IHI RHB6 turbos used on small diesels and the Warner-Ishi RHB5 turbos are different animals.

Hi,
the worldwide Spider registry includes the Turbo Spider too!

Actually there are 221 cars listed! You will find the filtered list at:
https://www.fiatspider.de/der-spider/re ... ective=All

But: The Turbo Spider has no special Turbo limited edition no. or something link that. They are just sorted out at the production line.
They got some Legend turbo badges:

Wolud be great to get your car data for the registry too!

Ralf,
Thank you for the information and the link. I need to check the car for the Legend sticker and the diagram. I know my car is a turbo because it has the sticker on the front fenders and it has the boost/vacuum gauge in the middle of the instrument cluster.
Do you know if the exhaust manifold was a custom piece for the turbo or did legend modify the stock manifold to mount the turbo?
Best Regards
Jorge

This might be worth looking into. I believe it is the same or similar to what Allison’s sells in his web shop.

I don’t recall where I got this from, but I’ll take it to work and try to turn it into a .pdf file. There are too many pages to post manually.

I was finally able to convert the above turbo brochure/manual into pdf format and can email it to anyone interested.

Eventually I'll make sure it finds its way over to the Mirafiori library as well.
