80 Spider 2000 Electrical Issues - WHAT ELSE?!

Post by Spiderman80 »

Ok... So I've been working on bringing my beautiful 1980 Spider 2000 back to life from having sat in a storage unit and garage WAY too long! BLAME KIDS AND SPORTS! Now that I am an empty nester, I'm determined to revive the car that I have had since I was 16 and drove my wife in on our first date. Ok... No more Kleenex!

Unknown to me, some kid (the son of the storage unit owner where I kept it) started tinkering with the car, thinking he was going to own it someday. Most of his monkey work has been repaired, engine, brakes, etc... But the remaining issues are electrical. I have a fuel gauge that doesn't work, but I have been using the forum to trouble shoot that. I also found that he crossed the bulbs behind the speedo so that my signal light went on when I turned on the headlights, but I reversed the bulbs back and that seems to work fine. He also somehow disconnected the speedo cable, but I fixed that as well. What is completely torturing me now is that my gauge lights are not working, and I have no signal lights flashing with their associated clicking noise when I turn on the turn signal. High beams work. Headlights work. And, somewhere in my attempts to fix the other stuff, my temp gauge stopped working. GREMLINS!! I have a few bulbs that are out (license plate right side, and one tail light). Should I make sure those are working first? Did I perhaps screw up the grounds when I was in tinkering with the other stuff behind the dash? None of the gauges have ever been a problem in the past. Could it all just be a coincidence? Looking for someone to help me get my head on straight here...

With these cars, in my experience, one loose wire and 10 unrelated things go wrong. HELP!

I recommend you consider reading Fiat publication " Spider 2000 Electrical Diagnostic Manual 1980-1981. I covers everything about your cars electrical systems. It also has some troubleshooting guides.

It is available on mirafiori.com for members. If you are not a member you can join to access their library of Fiat Data.

I had a similar problem my turn signals didn't work there's a relay in the hazard light switch, my hazard switch was broken but once I got it switched out they worked fine now maybe try your switch if not just make sure all your connectors are tight. Good luck
