electrical issue

Post by georgeramos »

My 71, on Fuse 10(L) has a fat red wire that leads to an inline fuse holder which then leads to two purple wires. The circuit is getting hot enough to melt the fuse holder and the the fuse itself filling the car (even top down) with noxious fumes of burning plastic.

Brad's online wiring diagram does not show this inline holder and the wires are a different color. I need to trace where the wires go but has anyone had an event where a short or something melted plastic?

Not sure if related but my batt charge light comes on randomly, stays lit for a while then shuts off for a while...

I checked the alternator and the battery while the light was on and seemed to be getting proper charge.

my car has such a rats nest of wiring I need to spend a LOT of time sorting this mess.

Only when someone puts an oversized fuse in because the correct one quickly fails from overloading the circuit or there is a partial short down the line.

Mine was a rats nest of cut open ended live wires when I got it that it took quite some time to find all the danglers waiting to contact ground. Had one that would only short out during a left hand turn while going over a bump which was a tough one to figure out. When the previous owner put the diesel in they were not very neat about it. The diesel is what they consider a one wire diesel in that aside from the starter and alternator connections it only has a fuel valve that needs to be powered to allow it to run. No computers, ignition system, etc so there are a few dozen wires from the gasoline engine that no longer serve any purpose..

nickrobin: You may have stumbled across one of the lesser known features of windows 7. The development team was concerned that someone would try to use Google while driving their Fiat down the road so they decided to add a subroutine in the system software that would cause a short in the electronics in the car being driven even if it was going 85 MPH in the left lane of the major 10 lane freeway in Ca. (or the Autobahn for that matter) It would shut the car down without a warning. Fiat was a little bit upset about this feature when they learned about it so they quickly did an upgrade and shipped only a few cars that would be effected by this Windows 7 problem. At that time they were able to hide this story from the "Auto Press". (But now the cat is out of the bag, so to speak) Sadly for you, it looks like you are an unlucky owner of one of the cars that slipped without the fix. It slipped through the crack, so to speak. You need to be aware that Windows 7 will no longer be supported in a short time. I suggest you upgrade to Windows 10 ( do not go with windows 8, don't even think about it ) as soon as possible. If you have the same issue with Windows 10 well, I guess you will have to just live it.
Have a nice day.
