Wiring compatibility

Post by rustyblade »

Hello Everybody,
I’m new to the forum. I am changing the electronic fuel pump on my 1975 carburetor equipped Spider. The new fuel pump is a Facet Gold Flo. The new pump come with 14 gauge wire to be connected to the existing wire that runs (I imagine) to the ignition. I don’t know what the gauge or amperage of the stock wire in the car is, only to say that it is considerably narrower than the 14 gauge wire on the new pump. Will joining these two wires together cause a problem?
Thanks.

If the stock wiring is 16 AWG you can pull 12 amps through 15 feet of it. I'm guessing your pump draws a lot less than that (I'd be surprised if it were more than an amp), so you should be fine.

Check the current draw of the old pump against the new pump to make yourself more comfortable. Facet is a pretty low current draw pump line, so I'm guessing you will be drawing a similar amount of current.

I'm with AJ on this. in theory you would have a little less resistance through the thicker gage wire. It comes down to the length of the wire. A generic fuel pump might choose to have thicker gauge to accommodate a longer run in the wire.
