Pop Quiz: mystery wires under dash and upper console.

Post by Hootch »

I'm not sure how a carpet installation turned in to this.... ;-)

Like so many others here, I've discovered plenty of unplugged wires, which 'might' explain why so many things haven't worked.

1) Under the upper console, there are some interesting items:

2) and this is interesting...

3) The mostly unplugged Courtesy light:

4) And last but not least, from under the driver's side dash:

I'll spend some more time with the wiring diagram to see what I can figure out, but any help would be fantastic. I'm really looking forward to slapping this back into place, finishing the carpet and stereo install, and getting BACK ON THE ROAD before I have to park her for the winter.

Thanks!

A couple of thoughts below. I have a '74, so my answers are based on that and checking the 78 wiring diagram - if someone else has contradicting information trust them.

F - looks like the power lead to the lighter. It's pretty easy to verify as it should be unswitched power so you can verify that it has 12 volts when the ignition is off (unless the fuse is blown)

H - is the light that plugs into the side of the lighter socket and illuminates the circle around the lighter.

One of the grounds also goes to the lighter - it could be G. There's only one ground in the wiring diagram, but it looks like someone spliced into that for a ground.

E - It's hard to tell from the picture, and you might want to trace the wiring, but that could go to the courtesy light. There's no ground wire on the courtesy light. E or something like E provides power and the grounding is done through either the door switch or a complicated routing through the hazard switch.

A - those two connectors look like two mystery connectors that I can't identify behind the dash in my car. I think at least one of the two connectors in picture 4 is another courtesy light connector. Mine had that same odd shaped connector on them. I can only see the colors on one - and it looks like your courtesy light has one of the three connectors already connected. Check the colors and you can check if one gets grounded by the door switch.
