Toilet bowl cleaner is my friend

This light sat in a bucket that somehow got water in it and subsequently rusted. I didn't scrub or brush it, I just dipped it into toilet bowl cleaner!!








Old hammer (this did take scrubbing and more soaking, probably like 15min soak, scrub, 15min soak, repeat for an hour of soaking time.)



I even had some misc. bolts and screws. I could just dip them in real quick and pull right back out and they'd look like new. it's pretty cool!

Cool! What toilet bowl cleaner do you use? Doesn't your wife get upset when she finds all those tools and such in the toilet?

I used some stuff called "The Works." I think the key is to get stuff that says "removes lime, calcium, and rust"

been there done that , wouldn't recomment it do , the brandnew dishwascher stil has some black oil grease in it

Bowl cleaner is an acid and has an etching effect on metal. Most of the wheel cleaners used in car washes are some type of acid with a chelating action the helps break the tension between the dirt being removed and the surface it is on. Car wash operators clean their tunnels with an acid product and high pressure washers to remove rust stains from the walls and equipment. If you have ever gone through a touch free wash you get two wash cycles. One is an alkaline product the removes
organic soils, oil, tar, bugs etc. The other is an acidic cleaners that removes inorganic soils, brake dust, road dirt etc. Also an acidic product will give a twinkle to glass and chrome.
In a prior life I was a sales rep for ZEP Mfg., a very large chemical company heavy in the transportation industry. I focused on the car wash industry with Zep and Armorall Professional.

Most of those bowl cleaners have hydrochloric acid which can be tough on metal. I like using phosphoric acid which is "Naval Jelly". It also leaves a rust inhibitor on the metal.

Naval Jelly is also great for removing surface rust on body panels. Let sit on the metal for a little bit and scour with a Scotchbrite pad, until rust dissolves and rinse with clean water. It leaves a rust inhibitor on the metal that will stop the metal from flash rusting. Just make sure that you sand the surface with a 80-160 grit sandpaper before you paint the metal to remove the inhibitor as it can interfer with paint holding power.
